In the 11-12 age category, Victoria Gardner, a 12-year-old swimming sensation, swept the competition with first-place finishes in the 100-yard freestyle and individual medley, and a second-place finish in the 50-yard breaststroke. But Victoria's journey is just as captivating as her performance. She transitioned from synchronized swimming to competitive swimming and hasn't looked back since.

"I used to be in synchronized swimming, but when I tried competitive swimming, I fell in love with it," Victoria shared. This young athlete has big dreams, aiming to swim throughout high school and earn a scholarship to Lake Superior State University's swim team. Her father, John Gardner, an assistant coach for the team, couldn't be prouder, expressing his excitement for Victoria's future.
A Natural Talent:
Another star on the team is 15-year-old Mackenna O'Leary, who dominated the 15-18 age category. Mackenna's talent was evident from a young age, as she recalls being more advanced than her peers in the pool. Inspired by competitive swimmers on TV, she strives to represent her Indigenous heritage and has her sights set on the North American Indigenous Games in 2027.
The Road to College Scholarships:
The Dolphins' success is not limited to the pool. Both Victoria and Mackenna attended a prestigious Nike swim camp, and Mackenna's name is already in the NCAA drafting pool due to her age. This means she could soon receive offers from colleges, potentially leading to a swimming scholarship. The team's coach, John O'Leary, father of Mackenna, hopes for her to secure a scholarship as she progresses through Grades 11 and 12.
A Family Affair:
The Soo Y Dolphins are more than just a team; they're a family. With 25 registered swimmers, they are currently rebuilding and nurturing young talent. The team's youngest member is six, and the oldest are 15, with room for swimmers up to 18 years old. They train year-round at the Sault Ste. Marie YMCA, and their dedication is paying off.

"I feel very strongly that this team is going to dominate," the coach proudly stated.
