Oliver Bearman's US GP Sprint Scare: Race Ban Fears and Track Limits Drama! (2025)

Oliver Bearman Faces a Distressing Moment Amid US GP Sprint Race Ban Fears

In a shocking twist during the recent US Grand Prix, Oliver Bearman confessed to having a frightening moment when he thought he might be facing a race ban due to a track-limits violation. This incident occurred in a heated sprint battle with Andrea Kimi Antonelli, and it left Bearman feeling anxious about his racing future.

Just How Close Was He to the Edge?

Current standings reveal that Bearman is precariously positioned with ten penalty points accumulated—only two away from an automatic race ban. Fortunately, he can breathe a sigh of relief knowing he will be able to participate in the next race.

During an intense moment on lap 14 of the 19-lap sprint race, Antonelli pursued Bearman fiercely as they battled for the last points-scoring spot at Turn 15. As the Mercedes driver successfully claimed the inside line at the corner apex, Bearman opted to maneuver around the outside, but in doing so, he inadvertently left the track, yet managed to rejoin ahead of Antonelli.

According to the FIA's Formula 1 driving regulations, the aggressor in such a move—here, Antonelli—holds the right of way and isn’t obligated to yield space to an opponent. While Antonelli did not push Bearman off the track, Bearman’s only escape path to avoid a collision was to navigate the outside, a choice that left him with very little leeway.

The significant takeaway here is that Bearman managed to avoid receiving additional penalty points. Should he have acquired two more, it would have led to a ban from the upcoming Mexico City Grand Prix. Thanks to his careful re-entry onto the track—deemed not dangerous—he escaped further penalties, though a ten-second penalty did drop him from a points-earning position. Bearman later shared his worries about the penalty points, revealing his frustration at the turn of events.

“I don't know what you all thought,” Bearman expressed. “But I really felt quite hard done by this morning. For a moment, I genuinely thought I was going to receive a race ban, which made me very annoyed. With all that was going on, I had a bit of fire in me.”

He bravely articulated his disagreement with the stewards’ decision yet cleverly avoided making any comments that could lead to further action from the FIA regarding officiating.

Bearman explained that due to a safety car deployment following an incident involving Lance Stroll and Esteban Ocon, Haas team members were pressed for time and unable to reach an agreement on whether to let Antonelli pass.

“From our perspective, we didn’t have ample time to deliberate because the safety car was deployed immediately,” he clarified. “But from where I was, it felt incredibly close. I keep thinking back to that ten-page set of driving guidelines in those two-tenths of a second when he dove on my inside, and I couldn’t quite gauge where he was in relation to my mirror or anything else.”

“So ultimately, I leave those decisions to my team. However, by the time they were prepared to make a call, the safety car was already out,” he added.

A Season to Forget for Haas

This season has proven to be challenging for Haas F1, currently just slightly ahead of the Alpine team, who have also faced difficulties throughout the year. The team did attempt to introduce upgrades during the Austin race, which had been tested successfully by Ocon during the first practice session, but these improvements have yet to be installed on both cars.
