A new app, the Tenant Credit Check Tool (TCCT), aims to revolutionize the rental market by screening out problematic tenants. However, despite its innovative approach, it's unlikely to solve the complex rental issues in Cyprus. The brainchild of 28-year-old Christos Clerides, TCCT leverages Open Banking APIs to conduct a basic credit check. This involves prospective tenants providing details of their main bank account and consenting to data mining for the previous three months. The app then analyzes transaction patterns, assessing the stability of income and expenditure. This process, however, is not without controversy. Critics argue that it doesn't guarantee a tenant's reliability, as financial stability doesn't equate to responsible tenancy. The app's effectiveness is further questioned due to the slow pace of the justice system in Cyprus, which exacerbates the problem of non-paying tenants. Despite these challenges, TCCT offers a promising step towards improving rental market transparency and security, but it's clear that a comprehensive solution requires more than just technological innovation.
