Sarfaraz was actually part of the India squad during the Border-Gavaskar Trophy series against Australia in 2024-25 but spent the entire five-Test match series on the bench. More recently, despite a solid track record in the longer format of the game, he didn't make the cut for the Shubman Gill-led India squad that will face off against England in the Anderson-Tendulkar Trophy 2025. Rahane, fresh off a 151-run knock in his recent Ranji appearance, acknowledges the difficulty of being constantly ignored despite performing well. He emphasized the importance of focusing on the things Sarfaraz can control.
"The only thing I can tell him is don’t get distracted and frustrated. It’s very easy to say but it’s very hard to do," Rahane told the Indian Express. "You can just focus on playing cricket and keep scoring runs. He’s been doing that. But as a player, when you go through this phase, it’s really challenging and tough. But keep your head down and just focus on the controllable things.” This advice seems simple on the surface, but the mental fortitude required to consistently perform under such circumstances is immense. And this is the part most people miss... the pressure of expectation can be crippling.
Now, let's talk about Rishabh Pant. After recovering from an injury sustained during the England Test series, he's set to make his comeback, leading the Sarfaraz-less India A side against South Africa A. Looking back at Sarfaraz Khan's international career, he made his Test debut against England in 2024. So far, the Mumbai batsman has played six Test matches, accumulating 371 runs in 11 innings, with a highest score of 150. His record includes three half-centuries and one century. His last Test appearance was against New Zealand in 2024 at the Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai.
